The developer’s marketing playbook
Email marketing for developers: start with one useful customer action
You shipped the app. Someone signed up. Then nothing happened.
Before writing a newsletter, decide what that person needs to do to get value. For a booking tool, it might be publishing a booking page. For an analytics app, it might be connecting a data source. That first useful result is often called activation.
Your first email campaign can help people reach it. You already know the product; your coding agent can turn that knowledge into a sequence and the application behavior behind it.
Pick the campaign that matches your situation
| What you have | Start with | First outcome to watch |
|---|---|---|
| New users who do not finish setup | Welcome and activation emails | Users reaching the first useful result |
| Visitors who want to learn more | A useful signup offer and nurture emails | Subscribers taking a product action |
| A B2B product and a clear buyer | Account research and reviewed outreach | Qualified conversations |
“Nurture” simply means sending useful follow-up information to someone who has expressed interest. Outbound is different: you are initiating the conversation. These campaigns need different audiences, messages, and enrollment rules.
If you have no visitors or subscribers, writing a welcome sequence does not create an audience. Pair it with a way for suitable people to discover the product. For a business product, the AI SDR workflow can help research a small candidate list.
Give every email one job
Consider a fictional appointment app called Slotbook. A new user has created an account but has not published a booking page.
A useful email could say:
Subject: publish your booking page
Your next step in Slotbook is to set your availability and publish a booking page. Then clients can choose a time that works for both of you.
Open your booking-page settings to finish setup.
Alex
This illustrative draft assumes those capabilities exist. Its button should open the actual setup page. If the user has already published it, skip this reminder and choose a relevant next action.
A generic “discover our powerful features” email gives the reader another decision. A concrete next step helps them use the product.
Research before asking the agent to sound persuasive
Your repository explains what the app does. Public research can reveal how buyers describe the problem and which alternatives they use.
Use Saka to discover relevant businesses and your agent’s web tools to inspect public sources. Save the evidence beside your strategy. Ask the agent to distinguish what a source says from what it infers. An article about a common problem does not prove every prospect has it.
This evidence also improves the offer. You might learn that people need a template to get started, a sample report to evaluate the product, or a short explanation of how to move their existing data.
Put the campaign beside the code
Save the audience, email copy, and enrollment rules in the project. Your agent can connect them to the same events the app already understands: signup, setup complete, trial started, or subscription changed.
Start with a local preview. Trigger a sample signup, inspect the message, then mark the sample user activated. A setup reminder should now be skipped. Repeat the signup event and confirm the preview does not queue the welcome email twice.
Those checks turn the strategy into behavior you can inspect. The starter prompt asks your agent to create those artifacts and run the preview.
Review customer actions each week
Pick one outcome before launch. For Slotbook, that could be the share of eligible new users who publish a booking page within seven days. Record the number of users as well as the percentage.
When results are weak, look for the actual obstacle. Perhaps users cannot find a setting. Perhaps your emails describe the wrong benefit. Perhaps the audience has no need for the product. Each explanation suggests a different change.
The prompt is free to use. Production Saka business records use prepaid credit. Your agent and sending services may have separate costs. Start with the quickstart, then use the launch guide when you are ready to deliver real messages.
